Challenges & Solutions:
Otto Engineering, a manufacturer of precision high-tech electrical components needed to expand it’s operation to keep up with demand. An existing 3 story brick building located adjacent it’s existing facility would make the ideal location, keeping all of Otto Engineering’s operations in the old town district of Carpentersville, Illinois.
The existing building was built in 1860 for Illinois Iron and Bolt, a manufacturer of farm implements, and was constructed of heavy timber framing with a multy-wythe brick façade. After many discussions, it was decided to keep the existing 3 story building and renovate it completely to reveal its historic wood structure, while updating it for modern office functions. 3 new stairs were added to meet current code requirements. Existing brick was salvaged from smaller buildings on the site and used in the new stair towers.
An addition of approximately 20,000 square feet was added and contains manufacturing/assembly space and a shipping and receiving dock with warehouse storage space. Brick Corbels and medallions match the historic character of the existing 3 story structure. Salvage “Chicago” brick was used to help integrate the addition.
