Basic Principles of Energy Conservation
Site plan to use natural resources – sun, trees, water.
Incorporate passive heating and cooling – control flow of solar heat gain, provide summer shading, design for airflow to cool and provide fresh air.
Provide enhanced insulation, tight envelope, and high-performance windows prevent heat gain and loss, (also get more comfortable environment) buildings use less energy and create smaller load so smaller HVAC equipment can be used (less expense and less noise).
Use alternate renewable sources of energy – solar, wind, water, geothermal for electrical and heating needs, reducing need for traditional energy sources.
Daylighting techniques reduce demand for electrical lighting energy, reduce amount of cooling needed (also improves well-being and productivity of occupants).
Use energy efficient equipment and appliances with timers (EPA’s energy star ratings) – save energy and reduce created heat, which means less cooling is needed.
Use motion controlled fixtures.
Use low-embodied energy materials that need less energy to be produced.
Use hydronic heating systems.
Use local materials that will use less transportation energy.
Design for efficient water and heat distribution.
Insulate pipes.
